Under a theory known as "Civil Darwinism", bigger urban communities chase and ingest littler settlements in the "Incomparable Hunting Ground", which incorporates Great Britain and Continental Europe. In resistance, settlements of the "Counter Traction League" have built up an elective progress comprising of "static settlements" (customary, non-versatile urban areas) in Asia driven by Shan Guo (in the past China), secured by the "Shield Wall". Relics of present day innovation, for example, toasters, PCs, and iPhones are esteemed as "Old-Tech." The city of London catches a little mining town called Salzhaken, engrossing its populace and assets, under requests of Lord Mayor Magnus Crome. A veiled lady among the Salzhakens is Hester Shaw, who looks to kill Thaddeus Valentine, Head of the Guild of Historians. Tom Natsworthy, an adolescent Apprentice Historian, is sent to London's "Gut" to gather Old-Tech for London's Museum, joined by Valentine's amiable little girl Katherine.
