The film is about a container of brew squeezed to your lips — so all that he says in his unplaceable twang conveys a sort of twofold weight. His words may be the main thing in his life that he's at any point picked deliberately. So when he sits on the patio of his summary Portland house, holds out a wad of money, and apologizes to his towheaded high school child that he just has $20 to save, it's straightforward that Ray's not simply discussing the cash.
